Sassari 12 May: Calvacata Sarda 2024

Loading Events

With the arrival of the month of May, Sassari is preparing to experience the 73rd edition of the Cavalcata Sarda. In fact, this beautiful spring festival will take place on Sunday 12 May, although not in the usual period, i.e. the penultimate Sunday of May, due to a decision taken by the Municipality of Sassari in agreement with the Administration of Porto Torres, with a view to collaboration and a global and unitary vision of the entire territory. This year, the weekend on which the Cavalcata Sarda is traditionally held (the penultimate Sunday in May) in this 2024, the celebrations for the feast of the Turretan Martyrs will also take place. And since the latter is linked to a religious calendar and is held on Pentecost Day, it cannot be moved, while the Cavalcade is a civil festivity.

This festival is very much felt and awaited both by the Sardinians themselves and by the tourists who come from all over the world to watch the parade of more than two thousand people dressed in traditional dress, who parade on behalf of the island's municipalities every year. A festival whose historical roots go back to the cavalcades through the streets of the city in honour of the rulers.

In fact, the first modern edition of the Cavalcata Sarda took place in 1899 for the inauguration of the monument to Victor Emmanuel II in Piazza d'Italia (Sassari's main square), in the presence of King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy.

In short, an unforgettable spectacle, giving life to the largest secular event in Sardinia. A great spring festival that has earned the title of 'festival of beauty', precisely because of the richness and majesty that characterise it.
