Among the many recurring dreams when we were children was probably to be able to go back into the past and experience, perhaps, a day in Roman times inside a Roman fort (castrum).
This dream, at least in part, can come true if you come on holiday to Sardinia Country, in the north west of the island, near Sassari in the locality of La Crucca, where you will find the first and only existing reconstruction in Italy that gives a clear idea of what a Roman Castrum and the life of the Roman soldiers who lived there might have been like: a very interesting reconstruction of a Roman fortress from the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. 2000 years ago.
The Castrum as you will see it is thanks to the Castrum Romano Association, born from a passion for ancient Rome, which works in the field of historical re-enactment and the historical, cultural, recreational and leisure activities that are organised annually in the park, which surrounds the Roman fort of La Crucca.
CASTRUM
The Roman castrum (plural castra) was the fortification that Roman legionaries built during their campaigns of conquest. Inside it were a whole series of buildings used as soldiers' quarters, the commander's quarters, workshops, stables, storehouses, latrines, etc. It was a self-sufficient military citadel so that soldiers could live in safety during their campaigns of conquest of new territories. After the conquest, the castrum became the centre from where the dissemination of Roman authority and its civilisation, of which we are still a part today, began.
Inside the Roman Castrum you will have an unforgettable experience for all ages, where you can spend a different day in the open air and perhaps meet the legionaries of the Cohors I Nurritanorum, a Sardinian unit made up of Sardinian soldiers, which is also the Sassari historical re-enactment group that animates the Castrum in special circumstances. Inside you will find the buildings with the soldiers' quarters with all the furniture and objects of daily use, the commander's quarters, the armoury, the infirmary, the latrines, the bread oven, the blacksmith's workshop, a diorama room and a ballista (ballista) placed in defence of the Castrum under a tower.
THE PARK
The castrum is surrounded by a beautiful private park, with a beautiful lawn and many trees, with ponds and springs, equipped with a children's play area, a cafeteria, a barbecue with tables and benches, toilets (also for the disabled) and with a very large parking area also for buses.
EDUCATIONAL FARM
A well-kept educational farm with a wide variety of animals coexists in the park: llamas, emus, alpacas, horses, Vietnamese piglets, Tibetan goats, peacocks, turkeys, etc.

For pre-schoolers, on the other hand, there are educational activities only on the farm with: a honey workshop and a visit to the animals in their pens, to learn about their lifestyle and characteristics.

Throughout the day, your children will enjoy unique experiences designed especially for them, where they will have the opportunity to learn by playing! Lots of physical activity in the open air where they can try their hand for a few hours, in the role of legionaries and auxiliary soldiers, using military formations such as the tortoise and the shield wall, simulating battles and sieges at the castrum.
