Asinara National Park: the island of silence where nature has reclaimed its kingdom

The Asinara National Park covers the entire surface area of the island, which spans approximately 52 square kilometres and boasts over 100 kilometres of coastline. Adjacent to the land area lies the ‘Isola dell’Asinara’ Marine Protected Area, which safeguards seabeds, habitats and species of extraordinary environmental value.
The island belongs administratively to the municipality of Porto Torres and is one of Sardinia’s best-preserved ecosystems.
Its coastline alternates between high cliffs battered by the mistral, hidden coves, pristine white beaches and waters in Caribbean shades, whilst the interior is characterised by hills, valleys and Mediterranean scrub.
The highest point is Punta della Scomunica, which rises to an altitude of 408 metres and offers spectacular views across the entire Gulf of Asinara.
A story unique to the Mediterranean
Asinara is not just a natural paradise.
Its history is one of the most remarkable in Sardinia.
Inhabited since ancient times, the island was visited by the Phoenicians, the Romans and medieval monastic communities. In 1885, the Italian government decided to turn it into a penal colony and a sanatorium, relocating the inhabitants to the new village of Stintino, which was founded precisely as a result of this event.
For over a century, Asinara remained cut off from the rest of the world.
First the agricultural penal colony, then the maximum-security prison, turned the island into a virtually inaccessible place. Common criminals, mafia members and figures linked to some of the most sensitive episodes in contemporary Italian history were imprisoned along these shores.
The prison’s permanent closure in 1997 marked the beginning of a new era.
That same year saw the establishment of the Asinara National Park, which was to become one of the symbols of environmental protection in Sardinia.
The white donkeys, the symbol of the island
If there is one image that captures the essence of Asinara for the world, it is that of its famous white donkeys.
These animals, characterised by their distinctive light-coloured coat and blue eyes – the result of a particular form of albinism – have become the symbol of the island and one of its most popular attractions.
Alongside them live wild horses, mouflons, wild boars, goats and numerous species of birds, which find refuge in a protected environment with little human impact.
Cala Reale, Cala d’Oliva and the sites of remembrance
Visiting Asinara also means immersing yourself in the island’s history.
One of the most significant sites is Cala Reale, a former administrative and healthcare centre, which today is home to facilities dedicated to scientific research and environmental education.
Further north lies Cala d’Oliva, a small village overlooking the sea which boasts historic buildings, reminders of its past as a prison, and some truly charming views.
Along the park’s trails, you can see barracks, farm buildings, old healthcare facilities and coastal towers that tell the story of over a century of the island’s history.
