Platamona

In north-west Sardinia, 10 kilometres from the city of Sassari, Platamona is par excellence the beach of the Sassaresi. As soon as you arrive, you will find a huge expanse of light-coloured sand, of different types depending on the area, plunging into a clear sea with colours ranging from green to blue. Platamona beach (the name indicates a flat, wide surface) is the longest and deepest of the entire coastline from Porto Torres to Castelsardo: it stretches from the Abbacurrente tower to the Marina di Sorso. It is one of the longest coastlines in Italy.

The entire coastline is about 15 kilometres long with a width ranging from 10 to 30 metres and is divided into 'combs' or descents to the sea, within the municipalities of Porto Torres, Sassari (la Rotonda) and Sorso. The shallow, sandy seabed of this beach is ideal for families with children.

As you move along the shoreline, you will notice that as you advance, the composition of the sand will be different depending on the area: medium-grained, compact and golden in the easternmost part, lighter as you move northwards, where you will also find small dunes covered with Mediterranean shrubs and coastal flora, including sea lilies. In many places, you will see the dunes intact with a large and welcoming pine forest behind them, as long as the beach: practically, from the tower of Abbacurrente to the Marina di Sorso following the coastal road. When you are close to Castelsardo, in some places you will also encounter small smooth pebbles and shells, carried by the currents.

Nearby, you will find the Platamona Pond: it is a recognised site of Community interest and one of the most important wetlands in northern Sardinia, surrounded by beautiful juniper and pine trees. For nature photography and birdwatching enthusiasts, it is a site not to be missed, even if only to enjoy an extraordinary spectacle of nature in complete relaxation.

Platamona offers numerous services: a large car park, also equipped for campers, camping areas and is accessible to the disabled. You can also rent various bathing equipment and patini for sailing under the coast.
