In the heart of the Meilogu region, amongst the rolling hills of north-western Sardinia, lies one of the island\u2019s most fascinating and picturesque places: San Pietro di Sorres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, beside the magnificent Romanesque cathedral that dominates the landscape, a Benedictine monastic community has lived for seventy years, successfully preserving not only a religious heritage but also a precious cultural, historical and human legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday 25 June 2026<\/strong>, the Benedictine Monastery of San Pietro di Sorres will mark an important milestone with the conference \u201c70 years of monastic life, from its foundation to the present day\u201d<\/strong>, a special occasion to look back on a history that has its roots in the past but continues to resonate today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd36 A place that tells the story of a thousand years of history<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The hill of Sorres has been one of the most significant sites in Sardinia\u2019s religious history for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where the ancient diocese of Sorres was established, and one of the island\u2019s finest Romanesque churches was built \u2013 a true architectural masterpiece dating from the 11th and 12th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For centuries, this place served as a spiritual and cultural centre for the region, experiencing periods of splendour as well as times of neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not until the mid-20th century that Sorres began to experience a new era.<\/p>\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd36 The Return of the Benedictines<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1955, the Benedictine community settled once again at San Pietro di Sorres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, the monastery has become a focal point for religious life in Sardinia, as well as a place of hospitality, study and dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monks have contributed to the preservation of the monumental complex, to the promotion of Benedictine spirituality and to the development of a site that still attracts pilgrims, scholars and visitors from across the island and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventy years on from that historic moment, the monastic community is celebrating this important anniversary by looking back at the past, but also at the challenges of the present and the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 A conference to mark 70 years of monastic presence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The event is scheduled for Thursday 25 June 2026 at 6.30 pm<\/strong>, in the Sala del Crocifisso of the Monastery of San Pietro di Sorres<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme includes an introductory musical performance by Jana Bitti on the flute and Luca Virgilio on the organ, followed by official welcoming remarks from Abbot Dom Luigi E. Tiana, the Mayor of Borutta<\/a> Silvano Arru, the Archbishop of Sassari, Monsignor Francesco Soddu, and the President of the Fondazione di Sardegna, Giacomo Spissu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be followed by a number of talks on the history, religious life and architectural development of the monastery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
