Banari

The town of Banari, with its 617 inhabitants, is located in the northwest of Sardinia in the part of the province of Sassari called, from the medieval name of the curatorìa (administrative subdivision of the ancient Sardinian giudicati), because of its centrality, "Meilogu" or place in the middle. Possession by the Malaspina family ended in the year 1353, while that of the Doria family, lasted until the year 1421. It then became a fief, along with Siligo, of the county of Villanova Montesanto, belonging to the Alagòn family.

In the year 1796 the village participated in the anti-feudal uprisings promoted by Thiesi.

THINGS TO SEE

To the north of the village you will admire Mount Maiore while to the south is Mount "Sa Silva," of considerable naturalistic interest. Visit the wildlife oasis of "Badde Manna" and the heights of Corona Alta.

In the territory there are 19 stone pinnettas, ancient pastoral constructions typical of Sardinia generally circular in shape and with conical roofing. Also present are Domus de Janas known by the name of "Sos sette coroneddos" that testify to the presence of man since the Neolithic period.

In the center of the town, you can admire the Town Hall from the first decades of the 19th century embellished with the typical Banarese red stone, trachyte, of which the town was a great exporter. Four churches presentof considerable interest: San Lorenzo Martire and San Michele, in Romanesque style, the Santa Croce Oratory and Santa Maria di Cea.

Not to be missed, the FLM (FONDAZIONE LOGUDORO MEILOGU) Contemporary Art Museum, established in the year 2001, is located in the Tonca Palace, dating back to the year 1200. It obtains important feedback from the public and national critics every year for the major exhibitions it promotes, continually modifying themes and arrangements, making it new each time. The collection, consists to date of 400 works, including painting and sculpture, by artists active since the first half of the 20th century, including Aligi Sassu, Mario Sironi, Giò Pomodoro, Salvatore Fiume and permanently the exhibition Giuseppe Carta, "On the Thread of Memory."

If you find yourself in Banari in the month of December, for the past several years takes place the "Carrelas in Festa" event; an all-day event where you can see displays of local handicrafts set up in old dwellings, working with characteristic products.

There is no shortage of places where lodge and taste a typical local dish, from roasted sausages to "Su pane untinadu," carasau bread (Sardinian bread shaped like a very thin and crispy disc, suitable for long storage) soaked and placed on the grill to heat over the embers, on which is then dripped over the fat of a sausage set to cook.
