The river's mouth Coghinas

The river's mouth Coghinas is located in northern Sardinia, in the municipality of Valledoria, in the Gulf of Asinara. It is the most important wetland in northern Sardinia and the site of a nature reserve covering more than 250 hectares. Here, the Coghinas river ends its course after more than 100 km, creating a lagoon called 'foci del Coghinas'. The mouth is delta-shaped and is subject to morphological variations that give the landscape different aspects from time to time. The vegetation is lush everywhere, both along the banks and at the mouth, characterised by sand dunes. The entire area is populated by a variety of bird species and is therefore a ZPS (Special Protection Area) and SIC (Site of Community Interest). Along the coast, the area stretches for 13 km.

The vegetation is particularly represented by rushes and reeds where 134 species of birds live, including the marsh harrier, kestrel, coot, black-winged stilt and kingfisher.

There is no managing body, the whole area is free, but protected as an ZPS and Sic.

The activities are related to the special nature of the area. There is birdwatching, boat trips, photo hunting, rowing boat hire, kayaking, canoeing.

There are several private companies that carry out excursions along the Coghinas river (for about 6 km). These excursions are related to educational, photographic and birdwatching activities.

In addition, many excursions also included a catering and accommodation service. The whole area, being a major tourist attraction, is equipped with all comforts from B&B, to agritourism, to hotels of different categories, to campsites.
