Pilo Pond

The Pilo pond is located in the western part of the Gulf of Asinara, immediately in contact with the Fiumesanto thermoelectric power plant complex and equidistant from the centres of Porto Torres and Stintino, from which it is a dozen kilometres away. On three sides it is enclosed by low hills and, to the north-east, it is bordered from the sea by a sandy strip that rises 3-4 metres, through which a short artificial channel has been opened to allow water exchange. The freshwater inputs are linked to the modest flows of the tributaries and consequently the salinity value of its waters is variable. The pond has an extension of approximately 120 hectares and a maximum depth of 2 m. Its catchment area has a total development of about 56 km² and largely coincides with the catchment area of the Rio Badde d'Issi.

The Pilo Pond is an important wetland in Sardinia. Under the 'Council Directive on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora' it has been classified as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). In addition, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia has included it in a 'permanent oasis of wildlife protection and capture'.

Although the water in this pond is less brackish than others, the vegetation consists of species with a high resistance to salinity; it consists of bush formations and rushes and, in the innermost parts, tamarisk. The area is home to various nesting species such as the Cormorant, Little Bittern, Night Heron, Little Egret, Great Egret, Purple Heron, Flamingo, Ferruginous Duck, Marsh Harrier, Albanella reale, Albanella minore, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon, etc.

Although the Pilo Pond is on private property, it is still usable, as is the case with all Sites of Community Importance, access to the public area is free and unrestricted, but it is not permitted to remove and damage the flora, light fires, disturb or take away the fauna or collect sand or rocks.

Although there is no Environmental Education Centre on site that provides guides to accompany visitors in birdwatching, it is possible to carry out this activity independently, in total freedom.
