Platamona pond and juniper grove

The Platamona pond is surrounded by a juniper grove in which trees of considerable beauty stand out. In addition to the juniper grove, there is dense reforestation with pine trees that in some places extends down to the beach. The pond, of ancient lagoon origin, has a regular structure in its interior, enlivened by the presence of sand dunes on which typical pond vegetation grows. The seabed is sandy and shallow. The Platamona pond became a SIC (Site of Community Interest) in 1996: it is a site that contributes significantly to maintaining a species or type of natural habitat in a satisfactory state of conservation. Since 2017, the Platamona Pond and Juniper Grove has also been a Special Area of Conservation (ZSC).

The different environmental conditions in the SCI of the Pond have given rise to such a variety of flora and fauna that a visit to this place is an extremely interesting experience. During a pleasant and easy one-hour walk, numerous species of birds and amphibians can be observed, all of which contribute to making this place a paradise for lovers of nature photography or simply for those who wish to relax in contact with nature!

There is a CEAS (Centre for Environmental Education and Sustainability), managed since August 2022 by the Legambiente l'Olivastro di Sassari club, from which radiate a series of easily accessible paths leading to the main areas of the SIC (Site of Community Interest). The paths, which start directly from the CEAS, are equipped for the disabled with a wooden slatted walking surface and fences with handrails, and lead to a hut for birdwatching in the lake.

Indeed, another activity that can be carried out, with the help of guides from the Legambiente l'Olivastro club, is birdwatching. The Platamona pond represents, as in many wetlands, a passage and stopping point for many species of migratory birds, so it is an ideal place for birdwatching where you will have the opportunity to observe interesting and rare species, possibly renting a kit consisting of binoculars + guide.
