Trenino Verde della Sardegna Macomer – Bosa: a scenic excursion with Esedra Escursioni

🔷 A journey through Sardinia’s landscapes and literary inspiration

One of the most fascinating experiences to enjoy in Sardinia is a journey on the Trenino Verde Macomer – Bosa, one of the island’s most picturesque historic routes.

This scenic route forms part of Sardinia’s famous Trenino Verde, a network of historic railways that runs through some of the most unspoilt areas of Sardinia.

Thanks to the excursions organised by Esedra Escursioni, you can enjoy a leisurely, scenic journey through plateaus, countryside and valleys until you reach the west coast and the splendid village of Bosa.

The Macomer–Bosa Trenino Verde is not just a journey: it is a different way of travelling, allowing you to discover Sardinia at a leisurely pace, taking in the landscape bend by bend.

MACOMER-BOSA

🔷 The Macomer–Bosa railway line

The railway line linking Macomer to Bosa was opened in 1888 and is one of the oldest in Sardinia.

The route crosses the Marghine area and descends gradually towards the Temo river valley, offering spectacular views of the Sardinian countryside.

For decades, this railway has been a vital link between the island’s interior and the west coast, used to transport people, agricultural produce and goods.

Today, the railway line has become one of Sardinia’s most fascinating tourist routes, offering a chance to discover the region through a leisurely, scenic journey.

🔷 A journey through Sardinia’s unspoilt landscapes

Along the route of the Macomer–Bosa Trenino Verde, you pass through a wide variety of natural environments.

The landscape changes slowly:

  • the basalt plateaus of the Marghine

  • traditional pastures and countryside

  • woodlands and Mediterranean scrub

  • wild valleys

  • panoramic views of the Temo river valley

These areas offer a glimpse of an authentic and little-known Sardinia, far from the most crowded tourist routes.

🔷 The Bauchiero carriage and D.H. Lawrence’s journey

One of the most fascinating aspects of the journey is the presence of the historic Bauchiero carriage, a model of railway carriage used in the early decades of the 20th century.

This type of carriage is linked to a very evocative episode in Sardinia’s history.

In 1921, in fact, the English writer D. H. Lawrence travelled with his wife Frieda in a carriage of exactly the same model during his train journey around the island.

That experience gave rise to the famous book "Sea and Sardinia", published that same year, in which the author recounts his journey through Sardinia with a fascinated and curious eye.

‘Sardinia is something else entirely. It’s like freedom.’

In his story, Lawrence describes the Sardinian landscape, the railway stations, the small villages and the feeling of travelling through a land that is still authentic and mysterious.

Travelling on the Trenino Verde today therefore means re-experiencing, to some extent, that very same experience, whilst taking in landscapes that, in many places, still retain the charm of those days.

🔷 Arrival in Bosa: one of Sardinia’s most beautiful villages

The journey ends in Bosa, one of the island’s most picturesque villages.

The town is famous for:

  • the colourful houses overlooking the River Temo

  • the charming medieval old town

  • the Malaspina castle overlooking the hill

  • the River Temo, Sardinia’s only navigable river

Strolling through the narrow streets of the historic centre means discovering a place steeped in history, traditions and picturesque views.
